Providence & New Haven Liposuction Surgery FAQs

Serving Rhode Island And Connecticut Area Patients

Rhode Island liposuction surgery patient

How is the liposuction procedure performed?

There are two ways that the liposuction procedure can be performed, the tumescent liposuction technique and the Ultrasonic Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL).

During the tumescent liposuction technique, saline solution is injected prior to suctioning the fat. Saline fluid swells the area to be treated, which encourages the separation of fat cells from other tissue. The tumescent liposuction technique is more precise, leads to less blood being lost, and enables more fat to be removed.

The Ultrasonic Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL), on the other hand, is a more recent liposuction technique. With UAL, the fat is liquefied by ultrasound, which results in a smoother and more efficient suctioning of fat.

Both the tumescent liposuction technique and UAL involve small incisions being made along the treated area. Fat is removed by a high-pressure vacuum, the area is then stitched together, and a protective garment to contain swelling.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for liposuction?

A good liposuction candidate is a man or woman who is in generally in good health, but has stubborn deposits of fat. Liposuction is not designed to be an alternative to weight loss. It is important that you have realistic expectations to remove specific localized areas of protruding fat. During your consultation with Providence and New Haven area cosmetic surgeon Dr. Goldstein, he will discuss what you can expect from the procedure and help you determine if liposuction is right for you.

What areas of the body are most often treated with liposuction?

Liposuction is best used to remove stubborn, localized fat deposits along the hips, thighs, flanks, legs, abdomen, buttocks, arms, neck, face and back.

What can I expect during my initial consultation with Dr. Goldstein?

Dr. Goldstein will meet with you to discuss and evaluate your current health and medical history. He will also discuss your expectations from the procedure to see if your goals are realistic.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for my liposuction procedure?

If you smoke cigarettes, stop. If you are undergoing a liposuction procedure, or any cosmetic surgery procedure, smoking can cause a number of complications such as excessive bleeding and other circulatory problems. Do not eat or drink anything eight hours prior to the procedure. Any medications you take must be approved by Dr. Goldstein.

Will I be able to go home on the same day as my liposuction surgery?

Most patients are able to return home on the same day as their liposuction surgery, as long as they have someone else drive them. However, if you have a large area treated, Dr. Goldstein may require you to stay the night for observation.

Following my liposuction procedure, how long will I out of work?

The amount of time you will be out of work often depends on the size of the area being treated. Most of our liposuction patients are able to resume working in a week. However, you will have to wait several weeks before you return to more strenuous activities or exercise.

Will there be scars following my liposuction procedure?

You will have some small scars following your liposuction procedure. Dr. Goldstein will place these scars in the most inconspicuous areas so that they can easily be covered with clothing.

For more information on liposuction, please call or e-mail Dr. Goldstein at our Rhode Island or Connecticut area plastic surgery office.
