New Haven Breast Surgery - Breast Reduction FAQs

Serving Patients in Providence, New Haven, and Surrounding Areas

Breast Reduction available in our office in New Haven, Connecticut and Providence, Rhode IslandWhere are the incisions located for breast reduction surgery?

During the breast reduction procedure, incisions are made around the areola downward. Excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed from these incisions as the areola and nipple are moved to a higher position. These scars are easily hidden underneath a bra or bathing suit.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for a breast reduction?

The ideal candidates for breast reduction are generally healthy women who are self-conscious about the size or weight of their breasts. Other women choose to undergo breast reduction to alleviate neck, back, or shoulder pain. During your initial consultation with Dr. Goldstein, you will discuss your reasons and expectations to see if breast reduction is a good option for you.

How long does the breast reduction procedure take?

The entire breast reduction procedure is usually completed in less than two hours.

Is there anything I should to prepare myself for breast reduction surgery?

During your initial consultation, you will need to give Dr. Goldstein your complete medical history. This includes allergies, other surgeries you have undergone, and all medications you are currently taking.

Prior to your surgery, the most important thing you can do is quit smoking cigarettes. Cigarette smoking can lead to complications during your recovery from breast reduction surgery. You cannot eat or drink anything eight hours prior to your breast reduction surgery.

Will I be able to return home the same day as my breast reduction surgery?

Dr. Goldstein usually makes this decision on a case-by-case basis. Generally, breast reduction is done on an outpatient basis. However, we require some patients to stay overnight for observation.

How long after my breast reduction procedure will I be able to return to normal activity?

We suggest you rest and stay out of work for a week following your breast reduction procedure. You should not exercise or engage in any strenuous activity for four to six weeks.
