The Magic Wand of Cosmetic Rejuvenation
There is no magic wand. Many people would like to improve their appearance or enhance their looks but want no "down time" or invasive procedures. Unfortunately the creams, lotions, non-ablative resurfacing procedures, or other "quick fix" promises either do not work at all or give very temporary improvements. In order to achieve lasting results the skin or (other tissue) has to be "invaded" to a degree that will cause change in the bio-mechanical nature of the tissue and anatomy. This process invariably causes some form of injury requiring healing and recovery. It is in the very act of healing that permanent changes take place. The price of all good and permanent results is the personal sacrifice of recovery time from the necessary inflammation (healing) that takes place.

The Followup
I recently had the sad experience of a patient cancelling their anticipated and planned for surgery. The reason for changing their mind on something that they have been thinking about for a long time is an encounter with someone who had similar surgery (different surgeon) and gave negative remarks about the scarring. The sad part of this story is that my potential patient did not even give himself a chance to explore with a professional his recently acquired anxieties and put the situation in perspective. He did not give himself the followup that he deserved to make a more thoughtful decision, even if the final decision would have been the same.
